Voice on ChatGPT is a new feature that allows you to have a voice conversation with your assistant. Yes, that’s right, you can speak to ChatGPT without having to use your fingers! People in cold countries who don’t want to take off their gloves, rejoice! Those cold mornings at a Melbourne train station will be a breeze!

Voice on ChatGPT used to be a paid feature for anyone who had a Plus or Enterprise plan on ChatGPT.  But now, according to a tweet from OpenAI this morning, it is now a free feature if you download the app.

If you do want to use your fingers, you can upload pictures and have ChatGPT talk to you about them. See an interesting poster across the road? Just upload the pic and ChatGPT will tell you all about it while you wait for your train. Sweet!

Voice on ChatGPT is powered by OpenAI’s models, including Whisper, a speech-to-text model.

Voice on ChatGPT: You can ask it to create and read a bedtime story. Babysitters, rejoice!

If the app actually works…

We could not get the app working this morning, and this may be simply due to demand. Or of course, it could be all about the shenanigans with Sam Altman being spurned from ChatGPT’s parent company OpenAI. (You can read about the tea here, it’s juicy so get the nice cups and some biscuits!)

From what we know so far (and will verify once we get the app working) is that you can enable voice conversations in your settings and choose from five different voices for ChatGPT.

Voice on ChatGPT can talk to itself

Meanwhile people have been getting ChatGPT to speak to itself, using a two-phone set up. And the results have been… interesting.

Here, the AIs plan to kill all humans. How delightful!

(Also, could be fake, let’s not take this as truth).

It is capable of having nice socially acceptable conversations too. Phew!

Hopefully, we will all be able to download the app and get it working soon. It’s exciting times in AI, even if their parent companies are falling apart at the seams!
