Musk and AI: Elon, Steve Wozniak, Andrew Yang, and hundreds of experts have signed an open letter urging AI labs to “immediately pause” the training of artificial intelligence systems “more powerful than GPT-4.”
The letter, issued by non-profit organisation Future of Life, proposes that AI systems with “human-competitive intelligence,” can pose “profound risks to society and humanity.” The letter urges laboratories to pause training artificial intelligence machines for a period of six months.
“Powerful AI systems should be developed only once we are confident that their effects will be positive and their risks will be manageable,” the letter stressed.
As of writing, the letter has gathered over 1,100 signatures from notable figures. They include Pinterest co-founder Evan Sharp, Ripple co-founder Chris Larsen, Stability AI CEO Emad Mostaque, as well as professors from prestigious universities including Harvard, Oxford, and Cambridge.
Elon Musk and AI: Not liking each other
The Twitter CEO had made no secret of his dislike for GPT-4 creator OpenAI and artificial intelligence in general. Most recently, he replied to a tweet commenting that Bill Gates’ understanding of artificial intelligence is “limited.”
Major AI labs such as OpenAI have yet to issue a formal response to the letter. OpenAI released GPT4, the latest iteration of their ChatGPT artificial intelligence platform, a little under two weeks ago.
